What is a "marketplace"?

The Internet is ideal for quickly testing new business models in a simple manner. This also includes the concept of a virtual market place for a variety of different suppliers.
 
Presumably the idea was originated by Amazon, except that mail order business always envisaged ex-works delivery to the ultimate buyer. Others have coined further concepts: "Range supplementation without internal stocking" or "Networked range concepts".
